Zambujo Project reCover
The project aims to implement an environmentally enhanced forestry intervention in an area of 153.4 ha, targeting the conversion of intensive forestry crops (eucalyptus plantations), reforestation with native species, the promotion of protected agroforestry habitats, ecological restoration, and soil conservation on the Zambujo property, managed by the company Navigator Forest Portugal, integrated into areas susceptible to desertification, at risk of erosion, and priority intervention areas.
The area where the operation will be implemented is entirely located within a classified Natura 2000 Network area (PTZPE0042), and partially within a protected area (PNTI). Raiz – the Forest and Paper Research Institute – is responsible for the research work to be carried out.

IDfoods – Food System of the Future – Research and Development in Sustainable Agri-food Systems and Healthy Nutrition
The project's overall goal is the national development of products with markedly innovative characteristics that contribute to safer, healthier, more personalized, convenient, and sustainable nutrition.
This overall objective will be achieved both through the development of new agri-food products (processed and unprocessed), and through technologies and processes that support convenient and personalized nutrition, without forgetting the prevention of food waste (by extending the shelf life of products) and the valorization of end-of-life food products.

Development of eco-innovative products through the incorporation of biogenic calcium carbonate (waste).
This project aims to incorporate membrane-free eggshell waste/by-products into the paint and paper industries. The primary objective is to replace geologically derived calcium carbonate with biogenic calcium carbonate, which will allow for obtaining calcium carbonate at a lower energy cost, since the amounts associated with extraction and grinding are significantly reduced in the case of eggshells, and with characteristics that are unsurpassed in natural or synthetic processes, enhancing the properties of the final products.

Innovation in the identification and production of improved eucalyptus plants to address current challenges.
The objectives are, on the one hand, to make available new eucalyptus genetic materials that are productive, diverse, tolerant to adverse climatic factors, and with wood properties suitable for pulp and paper production, based on clonal material independently improved by the two national pulp and paper companies; and, on the other hand, to develop an innovative system to produce medium/mini eucalyptus cuttings at an operational level, improving the productivity of the mother plants, the rooting of the cuttings, and the quality of the plants that leave the nursery.

Products and technologies for the Eucalyptus globulus sector.
Development of cement products based on inorganic waste and biological sludge. Additionally, treatment processes will be developed to eliminate organochlorine compounds from bleaching effluents. The expected result is the production, on a laboratory scale, of geopolymers, cements, clinker, and biochar with commercial potential. Demonstration of a pilot technology for the removal of organochlorine compounds from factory effluents will be another anticipated outcome of this project.
