The international research projects in which RAIZ participates embody the joint effort of various entities to accelerate and consolidate a bioeconomy based on eucalyptus forests.

Resurgence

The RESURGENCE Project aims to help European industries become more eco-friendly and efficient.

The main objective is to make these industries operate in a way that uses resources such as water and energy more intelligently and reduces waste. This will be achieved through the application of the “Seeds of Hubs for Circularity” (S4C) concept. The idea is to create “Seeds,” which will be the initial focus that will drive the adoption of circular economy principles in various industries. This approach aims to create industrial ecosystems dedicated to achieving, in water, energy, and materials: Climate Neutrality, Circularity, and Competitiveness.

Fuel from Black Liquor through efficient hydrothermal liquefaction integrated into a pulp mill.

The BL2F project aims to develop an innovative process for converting black liquor from industrial kraft pulp production units into biofuel for marine or aviation use. The process involves the hydrothermal liquefaction of the organic component of the black liquor, producing a bio-crude, and converting the bio-crude into biofuel through a deoxygenation process. BL2F aims to contribute to an 83% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels, an important step in combating climate change.

Extremophile enzymes for wood-derived products: from pulp mills to insulation products.

The WoodZymes project is a research and innovation initiative funded by BBI-JU (Bio-based Industries), a public-private partnership between the EU (within the framework of the H2020 programme) and the Bio-based Industries consortium. Within this project, eleven participants from four European countries are joining forces to develop and supply the wood industry with "wood-transforming enzymes" active under extreme operating conditions (i.e., extremozymes) for the production of renewable-source intermediates.

This project, led by the company “GMV”, aims to develop applications to support forest management based on high-resolution satellite imagery. RAIZ is involved in the areas of forest biometrics, forest information and forest ecophysiology, namely, in the collection of information for the quantification of ecosystem supply services (timber production) and regulation (climate, water, soil protection and biodiversity).
