Biocomposites reinforced with mechanically treated Eucalyptus globulus pulp fibers.

RAIZ in collaboration with Universidade de Aveiro and within the inpactus project has submitted in 2021 a national patent application for the invention “Biocomposites reinforced with mechanically treated Eucalyptus globulus pulp fibers”.

The invention describes polylactic acid (PLA) or polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) biocomposites reinforced with Eucalyptus globulus Kraft pulp fibers mechanically treated by micronization for improving the biocomposite agglomeration and dispersion processes.

Method of obtaining starch betainate.

RAIZ in collaboration with Universidade de Coimbra and within the inpactus project has submitted in 2021 a national patent application for the invention “Method of obtaining starch betainate”.

The invention describes a method of obtaining starch betainate, a more biodegradable alternative to cationic starch ethers, with application in the production of paper material, such as printing, writing and food paper, particularly packaging.

Process for the production of bacterial nanocellulose from lignocellulosic biomass of Eucalyptus globulus and culture media and nanocellulose produced according to the process.

RAIZ in collaboration with Universidade do Minho and within the inpactus project has submitted in 2020 a national patent application, further submitted as international, for the invention “Process for the production of bacterial nanocellulose from lignocellulosic biomass of Eucalyptus globulus and culture media and nanocellulose produced according to the process”.

The invention consists on a process for producing bacterial nanocellulose involving the use of Eucalyptus globulus lignocellulosic biomass sugar-rich liquor, with comparable or even higher yields than other common culture media.

A process for producing xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulp and xylooligosaccharides solution produced according to the process.

RAIZ in collaboration with Instituto Superior Técnico and within the inpactus project has submitted in 2020 a national patent application, further submitted as international, for the invention “A process for producing xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulp and xylooligosaccharides solution produced according to the process”.

The invention describes a process for producing xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from Eucalyptus globulus Kraft pulp which involves only a direct step of acid hydrolysis and at moderate temperature and pH conditions and with short reaction times.

Polymeric complexes of luminescent lanthanides and functionalized cellulosic fiber matrices for counterfeit detection.

RAIZ in collaboration with Universidade de Coimbra and within the inpactus project has submitted in 2020 a national patent application, further submitted as international, for the invention “Polymeric complexes of luminescent lanthanides and functionalized cellulosic fiber matrices for counterfeit detection”.

The invention relates to polymeric complexes of luminescent lanthanides with ideal optical characteristics for use in counterfeit detection, being possible its use in cellulosic matrices as a guarantee of security and authenticity, consequently constituting different tools for the detection of counterfeit.

Forestry planning platform for sustainable forest management on a case-by-case basis.

RAIZ has submitted in 2019 a national patent application, further submitted as international and european applications, for the invention “Forestry planning platform for sustainable forest management on a case-by-case basis”.

The invention consists on a platform for indicating customized forestry practices for Eucalyptus plantation management, in the different stages of stand development and for the different edaphoclimatic conditions existing in Portugal.

Eucalyptus globulus bark pulp for tissue products.

RAIZ, within the inpactus project, has submitted in 2019 a national patent application, further submitted as international and european applications, for the invention “Eucalyptus globulus bark pulp for tissue products”.

The invention describes a Eucalyptus globulus bark pulp which allows the development of key properties of tissue products. Tissue products incorporating the developed pulp are additionally considered.

Semi-bleached or unbleached Eucalyptus globulus pulp for tissue products.

RAIZ, within the inpactus project, has submitted in 2019 a national patent application, further submitted as international and european applications, for the invention “Semi-bleached or unbleached Eucalyptus globulus pulp for tissue products”.

The present invention relates to a semi-bleached or unbleached Eucalyptus globulus pulp which allows the development of key properties of tissue products. Additionally are considered tissue products incorporating the developed pulp.

Dual flexible cellulosic matrix for integration of electronics and microfluidics.

RAIZ in collaboration with Universidade Nova de Lisboa and within the inpactus project has submitted in 2018 a national patent application, further submitted as international and european applications, for the invention “Dual flexible cellulosic matrix for integration of electronics and microfluidics”.

The invention consists of a renewable and biodegradable, flexible, lightweight and miniaturized, cellulose-based, double-layered matrix having a double structure with different degrees of compactness, which is capable of simultaneously integrating microfluidic functions as well as electronic and electrochemical components.

Flocs of fillers combined with cellulose micro and nanofibrils for use in the production of paper products with improved properties.

RAIZ in collaboration with Universidade de Coimbra and within the inpactus project has submitted in 2018 a national patent application, further submitted as international and european applications, for the invention “Flocs of fillers combined with cellulose micro and nanofibrils for use in the production of paper products with improved properties”.

The invention intends to solve the current problem of the need to use synthetic additives, which are costly and environmentally harmful, in the production process of paper products with improved properties, through the use of flocs consisting of mineral fillers conjugated with cellulose micro or nanofibrils, developed for use in cellulosic fibers. The national application was granted.

Method for decision support and impact assessment for innovation and knowledge programs based on research and technological development in organizations.

RAIZ within the inpactus project has submitted in 2018 a national patent application, further submitted as international and european applications, for the invention "Method for decision support and impact assessment for innovation and knowledge programs based on research and technological development in organizations”.

The invention describes a methodology for identifying and quantify, for innovation programs, their economic value and intangible assets created, allowing an evaluation of their efficiency and effectiveness.

Method for obtaining an extract rich in triterpenic acids from eucalyptus barks

RAIZ collaborating with University of Aveiro submitted, in 2012, a national and international patent application for the invention “Method for obtaining an extract rich in triterpenic acids from eucalyptus barks”.

The invention refers to a method, highly efficient and industrially easily implemented, for obtaining extracts with high contents of triterpenic acids from Eucalyptus bark. Triterpene acids have biological and pharmacological effects, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The method will have applications in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic and functional food industries. This patent application has now been accepted in Spain.
