International Research Projects

With each new project, we are closer to a biofuture.

The international research projects in which RAIZ participates combine the joint efforts of diverse entities to accelerate and consolidate a bioeconomy based on eucalypt forest.

BL2F (884111)

Black Liquor to Fuel by Efficient HydroThermal Application integrated to Pulp Mill.

BL2F will use “Black Liquor“ (a side-stream of the chemical pulping industry) to create a clean, high-quality biofuel, reducing waste and providing an alternative to fossil fuels. BL2F will develop a first-of-its-kind Integrated “Hydrothermal Liquefaction” (HTL) process at pulp mills, decreasing carbon emissions during the creation of the fuel intermediate. This will then be further upgraded at oil refineries to bring it closer to the final products and provide a feedstock for marine and aviation fuels. BL2F aims to contribute to a reduction of 83% CO2 emitted compared to fossil fuels, an important step in fighting climate change.

WoodZymes (792070)

Extremozymes for wood based building blocks: From pulp mill to board and insulation products

The WoodZymes Project is a Research & Innovation Action funded by the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking, a Public-Private Partnership between the EU (under H2020 framework programme) and the Bio-based Industries Consortium. Within this project, eleven participants from four European countries join efforts to develop and provide “WOOD transforming enZYMES” able to work under extreme operation conditions (i.e. extremozymes) for renewable and bio-based intermediates production.

PaperChain (730305)

New market niches for the pulp and paper industry waste based on circular economy approaches

It concerns the validation, at the industrial scale, of the replacement of natural fillers and aggregates by green liquor dregs and grits in asphalt mixtures and in self-compacting concrete. Results include the demonstration of new applications for inorganic residues such as dregs and grits for asphalt and lime mude for precast concrete.

MySustainableForest (776045)

Development of applications to support forest management based on high resolution satellite images

This project led by international company “GMV" aims the development of applications to support forest management based on high resolution satellite images. RAIZ is involved with the areas of forest biometrics, forest information and forest ecophysiology, namely, in the collection of information for the quantification of ecosystem services of supply (production of wood) and regulation (climate, water, soil protection and biodiversity).
