On March 19, around 150 students from two local schools (Escola Básica Castro Matoso and Escola Básica de Eixo) participated in the reforestation of an area of 2500 m2 of Quinta de S. Francisco. This area has been converted into a small Mediterranean native wood, in a project supported by The Navigator Company and approved by ICNF (Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests).
Four native species were planted, chestnut (Castanea sativa), Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea), green olive tree (Phillyrea latifolia) and the Montpellier maple (Acer monspessulanum). The last three species are new species for Quinta de S. Francisco, increasing its plant and habitat diversity. In particular, the plants from the green olive tree originated in the Adernais of Mata Nacional do Buçaco, an unique relic forest.
